Project – Woodgrange Estate, Southend-on-Sea
Client – Estuary Housing Association
Project Duration – 19 weeks
Project Description – This ongoing project with 2 phases already complete has involved upgrading the existing pathway network of a circa 1950’s housing estate. The client, a major housing association working in the south-east, required a fast, reliable and cost-effective solution to their particular problem that would cause a minimum of inconvenience to their residents.
The existing pathways consisted of terracotta tiles bonded to an existing pathway. Total Protection devised a system where the existing surface could be treated in-situ and consolidated to receive a new Addaset resin bound gravel surface. After a complex but remarkably swift process of preparation and treatment, the new surface was laid to the very high quality standard presented to us by the client.
Due to the high number of residents using the still active walkways, the works were sequenced in such a way that no resident was prevented from accessing his or her own property during the day’s works. The system was installed in such a way that no uncured or unfinished area of work was left overnight to prevent the problems of damage, or injury by the residents. This also insured that early notification could be provided to the residents of the projects progress so any necessary changes in daily routine could be made.
An added complexity was the requirement to provide movement joints within the new surface to take account of those existing in the substrate. Specialist jointing strips were developed with our specialist suppliers to encounter this issue.
The residents of the estate as well as the housing association itself have expressed their delight at the result of the first two phases of work. It is envisaged that the following phases will be complete over the coming years in accordance with the housing associations development schedule.
