Main Contractor - Ballymore Properties Ltd
Project Duration - 9 months
The project’s purpose was to upgrade the existing market floor to provide a new decorative surface finish and open up possible new uses for this famous market in the heart of London’s East End. The client’s intention was to transform the market area into a new space for hosting exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events. In order to achieve this it was essential to transform the market floor in order to accommodate the new uses and provide highly specified aesthetic finish.
Over two kilometres of new electrical ducting and surface water drainage was installed in order to bring the market up to a sufficient standard, it was then Total Protection’s task to provide a highly durable decorative surface that could be easily maintained and would retain its quality for many years to come. The design life the works needed to achieve was 80 years with all materials and finishes undergoing rigorous tests for suitability.
The Addaset resin bound aggregate surface finish was selected as the most suitable finish for its subtle colouring and use of natural products which gave the clients certainty of its longevity of visual character. The project incorporated a very complex surface drainage system with multi-directional gradients and falls incorporated in order to minimise surface water receptacles. The adaptability of the Addaset system was ideal for this requirement with it being a liquid applied and hand trowelled product there was no need for unsightly cutting or kink points that may have been required with other finishes.
The floor, now in operation for nearly four years still maintains the visual quality it had on day one and stands up to the rigorous cleaning regime it is subjected to daily. The market is now a new destination for Londoners on market days as much as it is for fine dining and boutique shoppers. Total Protection’s input into the area has been instrumental in ensuring that this important landmark remains relevant for many years to come.
