Project - Friary Estate
Main Contractor - The Apollo Group
Project Duration - 24 months (still active)
In pursuance of complying with specific amendments to the safety code for public housing in the UK, Southwark Council instructed The Apollo Group to carry out major upgrades of the large Friary Estate in Peckham, South London. The five phase project incorporated major upgrades to improve insulation, fire protection, anti-slip surfaces, anti-graffiti coatings and general redecorations.
Total Protection was originally tasked with applying non-slip coatings to the communal walkways, within one section of the development, in order to renew badly failing surfaces and meet the slip resistance criteria of the council. Using a specially formulated MMA system a fully colour coded, durable, waterproof system was provided in all communal walkways and staircases. The added slip resistance of the system, provided by incorporating very fine grade natural aggregates into the top coat, the safety of the main access ways was vastly increased.
From this minor beginning on the project within the first phase of the upgrade works, we were able to secure largely the majority of the surfacing works to the full project. With our vast knowledge of fire proof coatings and anti-graffiti finishes we have provided The Apollo Group with full fire protection coatings to the last two phases of the works. By using systems that are not merely a utilitarian finish, we have been able to dramatically upgrade the internal decorations in seven blocks across the site whilst drastically improving the visual quality of the residence.
We are still currently (February 2011) installing works on the development to all walkways and internal coatings and hope to continue to the completion of the project.
