BEXHILL-ON-SEA SEAFRONT

Project – Bexhill-on-Sea Seafront

Main Contractor – English Landscapes and Neilcott Construction

Project Duration – Phase A - 16 weeks, Phase B – 26 weeks

Project Description – As part of a major upgrade of the Bexhill-on-Sea seafront Rother District Council in conjunction with their Architects HTA elected to utilise the Addastone resin bonded gravel surface coating system for all of the major broad walk and pathway areas. The product was used for its versatility and high aesthetic output for minimal cost and speed of installation.

Total Protection were contracted to supply and install the works over two phases for two different main contractors. This involved a large amount of upfront co-ordination to ensure that the two phases, installed nearly 12 months apart, appeared uniform and cohesively work together. As well as taking instructions from our clients in excess of 12 months prior to installation (in the case of Phase B) the majority of materials were procured in advance and stored off-site in up until of works commencing.

The contract, due to its size, location and profile had many interested stakeholders. As the regeneration of the seafront is the major public realm project for the area currently underway, it was necessary to have clear and open lines of communication not only with our client but the council, design team, local action groups and interested local residents. On the ground the proximity to the public and in particular pedestrians using adjacent areas our traffic management and communication to passers-by was very important to ensure the works ran as smoothly as possible.

Total Protection, through our vast experience on similar projects using this system, was able to provide specific technical advice to the design team and main contractors to ensure the long term success of the installation. This included the provision of information regarding how to deal with day and movement joints, edge conditions and interfaces with objects such as street furniture and existing installations.

The project has successfully provided the local area with a much needed facelift and has improved the condition of the seafront to attract new visitors for many years to come.
